At 30,000 feet while my flight takes me back to reality, I ponder the wonderful time I had for my 40th bday in the desert paradise: PALM SPRINGS, CA!
After the ahmahzing party that Keith threw for me last week with all my East Coast peeps in New York at the Lexington Candy Shop, I couldn’t believe it could get any better. Enter Palm Springs… Keith had gone there for Spring Break this year and knew that he wanted to take me there for my big 4-0! I’m so glad he did because it was magical! We stayed at the ACE Hotel, it was young and fun and had a very “Camp Fred” vibe. To continue our hotel obsession, we popped over to Kelly Wearstler’s very regent The Viceroy with its citrus stripes and clipped topiary and then to Jonathan Adler’s whacked out Parker Palm Springs. I loved them all! We had a taco party on Friday and our BFF Lulu totes showed up to surprise me!!! SPEECHLESS. How she & Keith kept a secret like that, I’ll never know. Our L.A. besties, Darin, Delza and Susan also trekked out to celebrate with us!
On Sat, my actual bday, we biked around the town in our vintage bikes oogling at all the Mid-Century modern masterpiece homes that make Palm Springs so famous. Um hello… Richard Neutra anyone? Google him, you’ll die! Then we took the tram up Mt. Jacinto to a embark in my ultimate Narnia fantasy. At 8,000 feet we quickly morphed from a blazing desert to a serene alpine terrain with ancient trees, rocky outcrops & views that’ll blow your mind!
Next on the agenda was my bday dinner at Mr. Parker’s, the psychedelic restaurant tucked behind a black velvet curtain in the lobby of the Parker Palm Springs. Um, Jonny… There’s nothin’ greater decorator! Mr. Parker’s is this rock n’ roll opera of a place that was so dark you had to read the menu with a flashlight and I LOVED it to pieces! After dinner, we sauntered to the fire pit where Keith & Lulu presented me with yet another dazzling surprise… A key to Room #1 of The Parker. Sizzle Zap! I don’t even have the words to describe how special and unforgettable this milestone was for me… And I owe it all to Keith and my wonderful friends. I love you all… Here’s to 40 more years of crazy cute! xoxo, CeeJ!

5 days to go until my offish big day… Well, my 1st bday party of the season (I have another next weekend in Palm Springs) commenced on Saturday and it was ahamazhing! I really had the best time ever!! I know, turning 40 isn’t the end of world, but it does has some fringe of trauma, right?! Keith has been working so hard on planning all the festivities and I was sorta freaking about it. I was like one hawt second away from canceling the whole thing when he showed me where he planned to throw the party… The Lexington Candy Shop Diner on the Upper East Side. SOLD!
It’s this adorbz 1940’s diner that’s got the authentic trappings… Milk Shakes, Egg Creams, Butter Cheeseburgers and the decor is just redik cute! I can’t believe all the people that showed… WITH GIFTS. I’m totally blown away by how completely rad all my friends are. Thanks everyone for showing me the best time and thanks to Jen and Pete for being good sports about all the “lifting!” And thanks to my awesome #1… Keith you continue to blow my mind every second of everyday. But after I finished watching I was like “OMserioslyFG!”, that was insane! I love a good disaster movie like nobudz biz but this one might be just a bit too much? The day I got one step closer to… MADONNA!
It all started when Keith received this magazine tear from his best friend Véronique, who lives in France. It was an article from French ELLE about this new French Pop Star named Sliimy! The article mentioned how he loves fredflare.com but is pizzed that we don’t ship internationally. Yeah, yeah… We get a lot of that. Sliimy was super cute tho. Keith and I both LOVED all the colors in the photographs. Our curiosity was defs piqued. The next thing I know we’re totes obsessed with all things Sliimy: nonstop listening to his album “Paint Your Face” and tweeting back and forth with him. Super fun, Super cute! Then Keith gets one of his brilliant “big picture” ideas to help with the USA launch of Sliimy. What happens next is a whirlwind of activity…
Yup, Sliimy’s coming to New York, to the fred flare store to perform and we’re filming it ALL for The Fred Flare Show. Keith goes on overdrive to show Sliimy the best time ever. We’ve got gay Cheerleaders, tons of amazing food and loads of presents for Sliimy from some of our fave super-talented vendors. Well, the day was incredz. Sliimy and his peeps were a dream but what really freaked me out was a nugget of info that I got that day… Sliimy’s publicist is none other that Liz “The Terminator” Rosenberg… SHE’S EFFING MADONNA’S PUBLICIST! Liz Rosenberg has been with Madonna since the beginning of her career, nearly 25 years now. Liz is the lips obsessed - deely bopper wearing buffer between Madonna, Madonna’s projects, Madonna’s gossip and the Press! She’s amazing and how in the hull Sliimy pulled that off I’ll never know. If I ever could pick a publicist… Um, duh, LIZ LIZ LIZ!
So, after the day of filming Sliimy we planned to check out his New York showcase performance and I got word that Liz was gonna be there. I died. I got really nervous and kinda clammy! How can I possible meet the publicist of my lifelong idol??? Not a question I’ve ever had to ask myself. It was about 8PM when we marched right into the club where Sliimy was performing. I was armed with my light blue risky biz glasses, a bowtie from Sliimy and of course, my vintage Madonna “Who’s That Girl” concert tee. I figured it would get Liz’s attention. And then there she was… All 5′4″ of her. Decked out in a chartreuse satin jacket and little Eiffel Tower souvenirs glued to her headband… She looked like the cutest version of the Statue of Liberty I’ve ever seen and my heart sunk into my stomach! But I had to meet Liz, riiight? So Keith and I went right up to her and before I could say my name, she gave me the biggest bear hug, thanked us for taking such great care of Sliimy that morning and swore she’d make a visit to our store… SHUT UP RIGHT NOW!!! She’s on Madge’s staff AND she’s a sweetheart cupcake too!

Seriously? Wow! Was watching this week’s ep of Mad Men when the Draper’s take a trip to Rome and there it was… Betty’s hair stopped me dead in my tracks. She shut it down! I’m all up in that bidness! When in Rome… Do your hair like a Betty do! Croissants aren’t just for breakfast anymore!

Yesterday, Patrick Swayze passed away at the age of 57 after a long battle with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. From the Outsiders to Youngblood… Dirty Dancing and Ghost and who can forget Point Break… Patrick & his films will always occupy a special place in all of our hearts. Our prayers go out to his family and friends during this tragic time! Thanks Patrick… We had… The time of our lives!
