NEXT BIG THING 2008: NOOWORKS posted by
If it’s not totally obvious, we HEART sunglasses here at the FF! We’re always searching to find superfun, unique styles to rock all summer long so today’s NEXT BIG THING feature is a total dream come true. Jennifer D’Angelo of SF-based Nooworks has designed these incredible snack attack sunnies that we think are, well, life-changing. Let’s read on and learn more!
These sunglasses are amazing! Tell us all about ‘em.
Sometimes when I’m browsing your site I get so overwhelmed with cuteness I feel warm tears of joy running down my face. But sometimes, I have to confess, I feel longing too. Sometimes I want something more than sweet from Fred Flare, I want something salty, warm and delicious… like a hot dog! Or even better, some bright colored wayfarers adorned with hot dogs! Maybe they could come in bright grass green, sunny yellow or electric blue? Bright, happy colors for summer in high gloss double tumbled plastic like delicious candy! And can you imagine if the white interior arms of the glasses had hot dogs printed on them? No, no it’s too much! But what if they were not just for pleasure? What if they also came with UV protection to keep out 100% of all harmful rays, and had a spring hinge so they maintained their shape and comfort when coming off and on! No! No! No! I’m sorry to ask for such outrageous fantasies…
Ha ha! Well, we sure are glad you got outrageous on us. Can you describe the Nooworks gal or guy?
The typical Nooworks guy or gal is someone who wants to buy ethically made products but doesn’t need to shout it across their chest. They’re into supporting the arts around them maybe by going to a concert, gallery show or maybe just buying a cool t-shirt. Nooworks is everyday wear for those whose days include going for a bike ride, to a rock show, the movies, for first dates, a dog walk through the park, lunch with your pals, an art opening, hanging out making mix tapes, happy hour, dancing, joyriding and for baking cookies. Or if you must, for going to work. Nooworks guys and gals enjoy life and laughing. You can’t take yourself too seriously while wearing a t-shirt covered in hot dogs.
How did you get your start?
After graduating from art school in 2004, feeling a little disenchanted by the world of product design, a good friend of mine drew a cuddly cartoon of my dog The Noo Noo. This drawing was so sweet we decided it must be shared and started screening it on t-shirts. When it became obvious that we weren’t the only ones who wanted to be cutified by the image of Noo Noo I started expanding by making other adorable tees. And when Minnie Wilde, one of the cutest stores in San Francisco decided to carry these tees, it was time to make it official. With a passion to bring fun back to design I founded Nooworks officially in August 2004.
So your company is named after your dog?
Yes, in honor of my sweetest companion and mascot! The Noo Noo who sits in her bed next to my desk is always inspiring me, nudging me to get off the computer and go to the park. She is a constant reminder that you need to go out and have fun if you want design fun. Oh and it’s nice to walk in the sun, chase squirrels and have snacks too.
Do you have a recent item that you’re most proud of?
Another item I recently made that I’m super proud of is my sweet ass pants! (ED NOTE… on FF they’re called the ice cream jean.) As a fashion designer with a product design background, I’ve always been afraid to tackle the almighty pant. So many different bums and legs on all kinds of ladies and we all like wearing our pants in different ways. Lucky for me though I have a rather large collection of jeans and a rather large group of girlfriends full of opinions about jeans. And I also happen to bartend in a bit of a hipster bar where loads of cute girls come in wearing cute pants all night long! Over the fall season I harassed all the fine ladies I came in contact with about their yays and nays on pants, and thank goodness for this! I learned how ladies like a pant with a bit of a higher waistband so when we ride around on our bicycles we don’t give a crack show. How ladies like a tapered leg but were looking for something a bit wider than their skinnies so they could fit their fave boots underneath. And most of all the importance of pockets! When I made my first sample pair I toyed with the idea of going pocket free to let the booty be shown in all it’s glory, but then I discovered many ladies were a bit booty shy. They want to show it off but not too blatantly. This is when I decided to use the pocket to my advantage and draw attention to these sweet asses with a beloved tasty treat, the ice cream cone. Thus the Sweet Ass Pants. Created like a beautiful Frankenstein from a combination of my 3 favorite jeans I have created for myself, and my sweet lady friends the perfect pant. I started with the classic dark denim version but was so pleased with the fit I wanted them in every color! I added to the line a stretch twill dyed in all my favorite summer colors and kept the gold stitching and embroidery as a nod to the classic Levis. The only problem I’ve found though with creating my dream jean is I’ve no excuse to go shopping!
What are you all about?
I am all about enjoying life and making things happen.
