FF’s NEXT BIG THING 2008: FELIX POPULI posted by
Today’s NEXT BIG THING comes from our fave diva of decor and decorum, NYC-based supertalent Brini Maxwell! Brini’s new brand Felix Populi brings us the daisy crafting kit. Read on to learn about what happiness means to this how-to goddess! If you live in New York, you can catch Brini hosting classic films at the Chelsea Clearview Cinemas every Thurs night in July & August.
For those who don’t know already, can you tell our readers about your career in television?
I started out with a show on local cable here in New York. (You and Chris were on a holiday episode of my show back in ‘99 or 2000, remember? Your products added so much to the episode!) I did that show for five years and then was picked up by the Style network. The Brini Maxwell Show was part of their schedule for two seasons and through that show I developed a national fan base. I’m happy to say that even though the show isn’t on the air anymore I still have devoted fans who enjoy my video podcast!
When did Felix Populi begin?
Felix Populi (or FePop as we like to call it) is very young. We started making throw pillows and selling to shops in New York and LA just last year. We then opened a shop online in December to sell our products at retail. Felix Populi, roughly translated from Latin means Happy People, and that’s what we’re all about, making people happy with our bright, cheerful items for the home.
Tell us about the daisy crafting kit!
I just love the elegant embroidery and appliqué projects from the 60’s and 70’s. They had a sophisticated quality that made them more than a handicraft or pastime - they were art. This kit is all about contrasting texture - the smooth felt, the rough linen and the satiny floss. I also like projects that are easy to complete. This one can be done in an evening if you’re quick - no more than a couple of days - and you have a fun, pretty project to hang on your wall or to give as a gift.
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by the irreverent styles of the mid twentieth century - modern, pop, Hollywood Regency. The interiors done in those styles were clever, exciting and unusual. I’m constantly referring to images from publications of the time for inspiration. I’m also inspired by our customers. It’s amazing how creative and inventive they are! They never cease to amaze me.
Word has it your Mom also works with you? What’s that like?
Yes, my business partner is my mother. It’s really wonderful to be able to work with her on Felix Populi. We balance each other well - she has skills and talents that I don’t and vise-versa. I’m glad that I’ve been given this opportunity to bond with her and it’s just deepened our relationship.
What are you all about?
Our ultimate goal has always been to expand into all sorts of products for the home. Right now we’re concentrating on accessories - the seasoning in the stew of your room - but look for furniture, lighting and even finishing products like flooring, paint and wallpaper in the future!
