I couldn’t believe my ears the other day when all the girls in the office admitted to me that they had NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE SHAG. Whaaaaat??? I thought Shag was one of those movies girls were just born seeing. I think my sisters and I could watch the whole movie on mute, and still be able to recite it aloud. It’s so amazing! Danit promised to Netflix it immediately.

Shag is the story of 4 friends in the early 60s who just graduated high school, and are spending their last weekend together before they all go their separate ways. Telling their families they’re going to Fort Sumter for an educational weekend, Melania, Luanne, and Pudge kidnap their engaged and prudish bestie, Carson (played by Phoebe Cates) and take drag her to Myrtle Beach for one last weekend of boys, beaches, dancin,’ cruisin’ and cars! Also in the cast is Bridget Fonda, the gorgeous wild child who has ambitions of winning Miss Sun Queen and running away to Hollywood, Annabeth Gish who is every boy’s best friend but dreams of being a girlfriend, and Page Hannah playing the senator’s stuffy daughter who needs to make sure “daddy’s liquor cabinet stays off limits” so no one knows they’ve been stowing away in the family summer home.

I won’t spoil anything, but all of their lives are flipped upside down on this magical weekend, and none of them will ever be the same! Since it also has an amazing soundtrack, and lots of cute boys to ogle at, this movie would totally make for a perfect girl’s night in one of these crisp fall evenings. And the sooner, the better! You certainly don’t want to be the last one to know what a sweet potato Jimmy Valentine is…
