Wendy Mullin designed nearly every clothing item worn in our 2002 hi-fi
holiday catalog. She started her fashion label Built by Wendy about ten
years ago in the back of a record store and has since sold her clothing and guitar straps to everyone from Gwen to Courtney to Joni. Visit her shop at
7 Centre Market Pl. in New York City!

How did you start designing guitar straps?
I had a lot of friends at the time - especially girls - picking up the bass or
guitar and I noticed that the strap that comes with your first guitar was
really lame so I thought I should make some that were cute and more
personal. Also I wanted to make ones that were more girly and not so Bon
Jovi or skulls-ish.

What's your favorite band?
I love tons of bands for different reasons but I would say I mostly listen to
old bands like the Kinks. I love tons of newer bands too but it's too hard to
pick a favorite band. I love rock!!

If you were in a band, what would you call it and what would
you play?
I would play drums because they are fun! I would be in a band with my
friend and call it Double Fantasy.

What was your look in the 80's?
I went through a couple phases: skater punk (independent truck t-shirts,
miniskirts and Vans) or my Brady Bunch mod Marsha look but my most 80's
was when I was way into the Cure and Joy Division and wore a trench coat
and had my hair like Siouxsie Sioux.

What rock posters adorned your teen bedroom walls?
I mostly hung up album covers like Flipper, Black Flag, stuff like that.

What were the first records you ever purchased?
Devo’s “Freedom of Choice” and Styx’s “Paradise Theatre.”

Have you met any rock stars?
Ummm, yes tons of them. Hello!!!
